Pressuremeter Test

pressuremeter test, pressure meter, pressure meter test, penetrometer test

The Pressure meter (PMT) essentially is an insitu measurement device for both stiffness and strength. The Pressuremeter tests are insitu loading tests executed by the expansion of a cylindrical cavity. The hole in this case is usually prebored and the stresses are exerted on the walls of the cylinder drilled in soils or rocks by means of a pressurised fluid acting on one or several inflatable membranes. The stress field created around the probe has a vertical axis of symmetry and a probe of sufficient length creates an approximately plain strain condition perpendicular to its axis. This relatively unique combination provides boundary conditions that simplify the analysis of the test data.
